OCA congratulates IOC President Thomas Bach on re-election

Kuwait City, Kuwait, March 11, 2021: The Olympic Council of Asia has sent a message of congratulations to Thomas Bach on his re-election as President of the International Olympic Committee.

The 67-year-old German was re-elected for a second term, through to 2025, at the 137th IOC Session held virtually on Wednesday, March 10.

“We would like to offer our warmest congratulations and best wishes to Dr. Thomas Bach on his re-election as IOC President for four more years,” said the OCA President, His Excellency Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah.

“We also offer him our continued full support and cooperation from the Olympic movement in Asia. Dr. Bach has shown great leadership skills in his first eight-year term, not only through his Olympic Agenda 2020 reforms but also in guiding the movement through the coronavirus pandemic that has changed the world.”

Sheikh Ahmad said the Olympic Agenda 2020 reforms had brought about change at all levels of the movement and pointed the way forwards for a more sustainable Olympic ideal.

“Under the inspiring leadership of the IOC President, the future is in safe hands,” Sheikh Ahmad added.

“The Olympic Games has host cities in place through to 2028, and several countries and cities are keen to host the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This shows the stability and solidarity of the Olympic movement and the attraction and prestige of the Olympic Games in the modern world.”

Sheikh Ahmad thanked the IOC President for his firm interest in Asia, and for attending several events around the continent during his first eight-year term of office.

“Dr. Bach has always supported Asia and appreciates the contribution of Asia to the global Olympic movement. He recognises Asia as a major partner and a trusted friend.

“In these difficult times, we are confident that Dr. Thomas Bach can continue to drive the movement forward and secure a bright and sustainable future for decades to come.”
