Nepal NOC honours inspiring duo on International Women’s Day

Kathmandu, Nepal, March 11, 2021: The Women and Sport Commission of Nepal Olympic Committee organised a felicitation programme at NOC HQ to mark the 111th International Women’s Day on Monday, March 8. It was inaugurated by the NOC President, the Hon. Jeevan Ram Shrestha.

Mr. Shrestha said that the constitution of the country had secured the role of women in society and protected women’s rights. He added that the NOC was totally committed to equal participation in upcoming multi-sport games.

During the programme, the Women and Sport Commission honoured middle distance runner Mrs. Bimala Joshi Amatya, who won a bronze medal in the 3rd South Asian Games in Calcutta, India in 1987, and administrative staff Mrs. Bhawani Adhikari, who has been working in the National Sports Council for three decades.

The NOC President, along with Women and Sport Commission President Ms. Jyoti Rana, handed over Rs. 25,000.00 cash to each of the women.

The Nepal NOC Women and Sport Commission has decided to honour one athlete and one administrative staff every year instead of every two years like before.

The Commission also decided to continue with the project on "Chhaupadi" in coordination with the NOC and OCA. Chhaupadi is a form of menstrual taboo which prohibits women and girls from participating in normal family activities while menstruating as they are considered "impure”.
