Kathmandu, Nepal, December 21, 2020: The Nepal Olympic Committee in collaboration with the Nepal Olympic Museum have started the ‘Nepali Sports Digital Archive Project 2020-2021’ so as to document for posterity the history of sport in the country.
The ambitious project is being carried out under the Olympic Solidarity Legacy Project of the International Olympic Committee which has provided a financial grant at the request of the Nepal Olympic Committee.
A formal agreement between Nepal NOC and the Nepal Olympic Museum was reached in March 2020 and work has been underway since August. This is the first time in the history of sport in Nepal that such an undertaking is being carried out on a large scale so as to pass on records and achievements to future generations.
The Olympic Museum has been keeping records of Nepali sports activities, participation and achievements since its inception, and now these will be preserved in a digital archive.
Priority will be given to Olympic sports initially, with information about athletes and associations being collected. Efforts will also be made on collecting documents on how sports started in Nepal including documents related to the country’s sports act, history of Nepal NOC itself and the country’s performance in international competitions.
The NOC said the success of this programme would give a definite shape to the history of Nepali sports and the digital archive would be made available to all those interested in it.
