Male, Maldives, December 20, 2020: Congratulatory messages on social media on being bestowed the Olympic Council of Asia Merit Award has left Ahmed Marzooq, Secretary General of the Maldives Olympic Committee, “overwhelmed and humbled”.

Marzooq was one of two recipients of the prestigious award at the 39th OCA General Assembly in Muscat, Oman on December 16 and was on hand to receive the award personally.

Since receiving the title for his services to Asian sport, the long-standing Secretary General of the Maldives Olympic Committee, popularly known as ‘Mare’, has been inundated with goodwill wishes on his Facebook page from the Maldivian public and elsewhere.

Laurentino Guterres of Timor-Leste NOC said: “Congratulations brother, you are deserved for it. Keep up the good work."

Jamyang Namgyal of Bhutan NOC posted: “Congratulations Mare Sir! Well deserved!! (:".

Many just posted thumbs up and like emojis.

Marzooq, responding to the torrent of wishes, posted: “All I can say is overwhelmed by all of the text messages, DMs, Tweets, FB posts and messages from everybody congratulating me on receiving the award. I want to say ‘Thank You’ to all your positive thoughts and vibes.”

Continuing, and in a message to the Maldivian youth, he said: “Set a goal and never be afraid to pursue a more meaningful life. You’ll go through jobs you dislike, disloyal friends, naysayers, losses, rejection and loneliness and many more challenges as you strive towards your dreams.

"Most important thing is continue to stay true without letting society, sometimes friend and family stop you on your path. Dedication, hard work and sticking to your goals and patience is all you need.”

Marzooq, who is a member of the OCA Media Committee, said he was “extremely honoured and humbled to receive the OCA Merit Award” and dedicated it to the Maldives Sports Family, especially to the athletes.

“Thank you everyone who helped and supported me along this journey,” he added.
