Zurich, Switzerland, December 18, 2020: Two years ago, Son Heung-min was winning a gold medal for Korea at the 18th Asian Games in Indonesia.
His latest honour has earned him global recognition for his sensational solo goal playing for his club Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League – the FIFA Puskas Award for the best goal of the year!
Son’s dream goal came against Burnley on Saturday, December 7, 2019. Collecting the ball on the left just outside his own penalty box, the South Korean superstar beat six players over a distance of 71.4 metres in 11 exhilarating seconds before finishing coolly.
The magical goal had already won the Budweiser Goal of the Season in the English Premier League and has now been recognised at the global level by world football's governing body.
“The winner of the FIFA #Puskas Award is Son Heung-min! Fans voted the Tottenham Hotspur superstar’s mazy run against Burnley as #TheBest goal of the year!” said a Facebook post by FIFA Football Awards on December 17.
Son, 28, captained Korea to Asian Games gold in Jakarta with a 2-1 victory over Japan after extra time in the final.
