Phnom Penh, Cambodia, December 11, 2020: The organising committee of the 32nd Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia in 2023 (CAMSOC) reports that Cambodia is now preparing athletes to challenge for medals in almost 30 sports at next year’s SEA Games in Vietnam.

The 2021 SEA Games in Hanoi and nearby cities and provinces will run from November 21 to December 2 and feature 40 sports and over 500 events.

CAMSOC reports that the National Sports Training Centre of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports has gathered the various national teams in preparation for the tournament with a view to entering almost 30 of the 40 sports on the programme.

His Excellency Vath Chamroeun, Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia and also Secretary General of CAMSOC, highlighted several sports in which Cambodia could challenge for gold medals at Hanoi 2021, such as petanque, vovinam, taekwondo and muay.

For this reason he is confident that Cambodia can win more gold medals at the 2021 SEA Games than they did at the 30th SEA Games in the Philippines in 2019, when the “Kingdom of Wonder” went home with four gold medals, six silver and 36 bronze in a total 46-medal haul and eighth-place finish of 11 countries.

The Cambodian athletes will challenge in various martial arts sports for further SEA Games honours in Vietnam next year and continue in their build-up to the 32nd SEA Games in the capital Phnom Penh in 2023. This will be the first time for Cambodia to host the biennial regional sports festival since it began in 1959.
