Monaco, October 16, 2019: Salwa Eid Naser of Bahrain, women’s 400m world champion, was the only Asian athlete among the list of nominees for Female World Athlete of the Year 2019 announced by the International Association of Athletics Federations on Tuesday, October 15.
The IAAF confirmed a list of 11 nominees for Female World Athlete of the Year who were selected by an international panel of athletics experts, comprising representatives from all six continental areas of the world governing body.
Bahrain’s Naser, who earlier this month won the 400m gold medal in 48.14 seconds – the third-fastest time in history - at the IAAF World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar, was short-listed.
Naser has been undefeated at 400m outdoors this year and has also won three gold medals at the Asian Championships and a Diamond League title.
A three-way voting process will determine the five finalists with the winner being crowned at the World Athletics Awards 2019 in Monaco on November 23.
The vote will comprise of the IAAF Council accounting for 50 per cent of the vote, and the remaining 50 per cent split equally between the IAAF Family and fans who can vote online via the IAAF’s social media platforms.
Voting for the Female World Athlete of the Year closes on November 5.
There were no Asian athletes among the nominees for Male Athlete of the Year.
