Sri Lanka NOC’s OVEP Debater competition produces all-girls final

Colombo, Sri Lanka, November 25, 2020: In an all-girls final, Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya of Colombo prevailed over Hillwood College, Kandy, in the Olympic Values Education Programme (OVEP) Debater 2020 conducted by the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka via Zoom technology.

The winning team spoke on the topic of "Engaging in sport by practising Olympic values - Teach the athletes to overcome barriers of life" while the school from Kandy put forward the view ‘Engaging in sport by practising Olympic values - Build a foundation to a future life".

The Colombo school, which won 87-85, consisted of Rosara Dayaratne, Detuni Perera, Ruvniya Weerakoon, Laseni Coralage. The teacher in charge was Mrs. Indira Ratnayake.

A total of 20 schools from across the island were involved in the online debating competition which the Sri Lanka NOC used to spread the message of Olympism to the youth of the nation. The competition progressed to the Super Eight round and eventually to the grand finale. Six of the Super Eight teams were from girls' schools.

The launch, management and operation of the OVEP Debater programme was presented by Sri Lanka NOC at a Regional Forum conducted by Olympic Solidarity and the Olympic Council of Asia and impressed the delegates with the organisation and objectives.
