Four-time Asian Games gold medal-winner Cho joins Korea’s Hall of Fame

Seoul, Korea, October 26, 2020: The late swimmer Cho Oh-ryun, who captured four Asian Games gold medals in the 1970s, has been named the latest inductee into South Korea's Sports Hall of Fame, reports Yonhap News.

The Korean Sport & Olympic Committee (KSOC) announced that Cho, who passed away in 2009 at 56, as its latest “Sports Hero”. The induction ceremony will take place on November 3.

Cho, who was nicknamed the “Asian Seal”, won the men’s 400m/1500m freestyle double in both the 1970 and 1974 Asian Games.

He also represented Korea in these two events at the Olympic Games in 1972.

In a vote by sports journalists and the general public, Cho beat out three candidates: four-time Olympic archery gold medalist Kim Soo-nyung, the 1992 Olympic marathon champion Hwang Young-cho and baseball pitcher Sun Dong-yol. 

Cho had also been nominated for the honour last year.
