Olympic Council of Asia meets Majd Eddin Ghazal

After making appearances in the 2010 and 2014 editions but not getting a hold on any silverware, Syria’s Majd Eddin Ghazal showed great character, determination and hard work to win the bronze medal in the 2018 edition of Asian Games (High Jump). Majd regularly participates in various competitions throughout the world, but amidst a busy schedule we got the opportunity to chat with him about things pertaining to his life, both personal and professional. Here are the excerpts from the same.

1. How did you get into the sport, High Jump?

Ans. I got into the sport of High Jump because of my height. I was sent to play the sport of athletics in general, but then I started to like high jump in particular.

2. Personally, what has been your favourite sporting memory?

Ans. Watching and experiencing the thrill and excitement of the 2007 World Championships will always be my favourite sporting memory.

3. What is your ultimate goal?

Ans. Ascending the podium at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020!

4. How do you think the Olympic Council of Asia contributes to an athlete's development?

Ans. The Olympic Council of Asia contributes significantly through financial support and the establishment of various tournaments on a yearly basis. It also increases the number of games and in turn, the participation level in these games.

5. Who was your inspiration when you were following the game?

Ans. I have been a keen follower of two athletes in general. First is Swedish high jumper, Stephan Holm and second is Russia’s Yaroslav Rybakov.

6. What is your favourite pastime?

Ans. I love to watch various International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) competitions and when I am at home, I love playing the Playstation. 😃

7. Do you have any superstition, related to your sport?

Ans. No, not really.

8. Which is your favourite holiday destination?

Ans. No place in particular. I love to go to any place which has a sea.

9. If not High Jump, which sport would you have played?

Ans. If not High Jump, I would have competed in the Triple Jump for sure.

10. How would you describe yourself in one sentence.

Ans. I strongly believe in the mantra of ‘Nothing is impossible’.

11. Any tips for budding High Jumpers out there?

Ans. Keep working hard and do not look back at your failures. Success will come your way only if you strive for it.

12. What is your training routine throughout the year?

Ans. My routine is simple. I train for about 10 months of the year and look to participate in various tournaments on a regular basis.

13. Who has been your favourite fellow opponent, if any.

Ans. My favourite opponent is nobody but myself.
