Male, Maldives, August 30, 2020: Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has announced that the resolution to readmit Maldives to the Commonwealth Games Federation has been approved.
He revealed that written confirmation of the approval had been received from CGF President Dame Louise Martin, marking “a very happy day for Maldivian sports”.
“Our thanks to all member countries who supported our readmission,” President Solih tweeted via his official Twitter account.
Maldives will now be able to take part at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.
Marzooq Ahmed, Secretary General of the Maldives Olympic Committee, tweeted: “My deepest respect and appreciation to CGF President Louise Martin and regional Vice Presidents Ms. Miryam Mora, Ms. Judy Simon, Mr. Chris CHAN , Mrs. Fortuna Belrose, Mr. Harry Murphy and Mr. Hugh Gragham for their personal effort and continuous support. Dear CGF Family, see you in Birmingham."
Maldives was a regular participant at the Commonwealth Games since 1986, up until it left the organisation in 2016.
Maldives last competed at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games in Scotland taking part in athletics, badminton, shooting, swimming and table tennis.
Rejoining the Commonwealth Games was a key electoral pledge of President Solih’s administration.
Maldives’ reintegration into the Commonwealth was officially announced on February 1, 2020.
